pizza rolls 1

These pizza rolls are quick, fun to make, and delicious, too! You can vary them by adding your favorite pizza toppings and you can also bake them, instead of frying, for a healthier version as well. The pizza rolls are a hit with kids and adults alike and are much more economical than ordering a pizza delivery.

If you choose to add more than mozzarella and pepperoni in the pizza rolls, be sure you slice your ingredients thin and then precook and cool them before using. If you don’t, you might find your green peppers and onions are a little too raw since these pizza rolls cook quickly but not quick enough to soften and cook the raw veggies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of won ton wrappers
  • 1 jar of marinara sauce (low sodium is fine and homemade spaghetti sauce works well)
  • 1 package of mozzarella cheese sticks (low fat is fine)
  • 1 package of pepperoni (low sodium is fine)
  • Optional: black olives, sliced jalapenos, pineapple bits, and/or thinly sliced, precooked and cooled vegetables, such as green peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc.
  • Nonstick vegetable oil spray, if baking
  • Vegetable oil, if panfrying or deep frying

First, we start by positioning a won ton wrapper with the short end towards us.

Next, we put 2 slices of pepperoni, half a mozzarella stick and a spoonful of marinara sauce on the closest half of the won ton wrapper as shown above.

Then we pull the end towards us over the top of the filling.

Then we fold over the long sides’ edges.

Continue to roll towards open edge. To seal the seam, dip a finger in some cold water and wet the end of the won ton wrapper so the pizza roll ‘glues’ shut. Make sure you seal your pizza rolls well to preventing any filling from leaking out when you cook them. As you finish making each roll, set them on a plate that has been lightly dusted with flour to prevent any sticking. Do not set them on top of each other as that could cause them to stick as well.

If you are baking the pizza rolls, spray all sides with vegetable oil cooking spray and place them, seam side down, on a nonstick vegetable oil sprayed baking sheet. Turn them over about halfway through baking time. Bake at 425 degrees for about 15 minutes or until outside is golden brown and crisp.

If you are deep-frying, have your vegetable oil at about 375 degrees and fry about 4-5 minutes or until the crust is a bubbly, golden brown.

If you are pan-frying, put about 1/2 an inch of vegetable oil in a cast iron pan and heat on medium high heat. When pan is hot, add pizza rolls, seam side down, but do not overcrowd the pan as you will need to turn the rolls throughout the cooking process to get a golden color on all sides of the rolls.

No matter how you cook your pizza rolls, the inside will be very hot so be careful with that first bite! Serve your pizza rolls with a side of marinara sauce sprinkled with parmesan cheese for dipping. Enjoy!
